Les deux prochaines réunions de l’axe « Interactions et créativités religieuses : perspectives anthropologiques » au GSRL se tiendront le 14 novembre et le 7 décembre 2018 avec deux interventions portant sur la Russie.

“Ancestors and the Ghosts: The Soviet Past in Russian (Religious) Imagination of the Post-Truth Era”

 

Anthropologists have always been aware of the coexistence of different kinds of truth, such as the truth of the observer and that of the observed. Moreover, the truth from the native’s point of view is far from homogenous; there are often competing positions within it. In my paper, I focus on competing vernacular theories of truth (Mair 2017; see also Roudakova 2017) developed in contemporary Russia. One of them can be called the “technical truth”, or truth through knowledge. Another one can be called the “truth through love”. This latter truth can prevail over the technical truth when it is considered to support the good, in particular the collective good. These different truths compete over the postmortem destiny of the Russian royal family, whose members were canonized as passion-bearers by the Russian Orthodox Church. The authenticity of their remains, the true place of their burial near Yekaterinburg, and the circumstances of their death regularly come under close scrutiny. I focus on a group of local amateur historians and historical reenactment club activists in the city of Yekaterinburg who struggle for their truth about the death of the Russian royal family.
